How do I find a conservator?

The American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works has a Find A Conservator section. You will have to register your name in order to use the feature. You can also post a question on NEDCC, Northeast Document Conservation Center.

How do I find a personal historian?

The Association of Personal Historians is the best place to start. They have a search feature, “Find a Personal Historian” that lets you search in specific areas. Most of the historians on this site create videos, books, and memory books for individuals and businesses. Their specialties include organization and presentation of personal items, which includes some preservation and conservation.

What is the ideal storage environment for most documents, photographs and artifacts?

The rule of thumb is what’s comfortable for you, will be comfortable for most of your items:

  • 68° – 70° (or 20° Celsius)
  • 50-55% Relative humidity

Photographs

  • Temperature should not exceed 65°
  • Relative humidity 30-40%

Film

  • 40° with relative humidity of 20-50% or
  • Frozen 32° with relative humidity of 30-50%

Are there professionals that will help organize photographs?

I was surprised to learn that there are professional who specialize in helping individuals organize their material and digital photographs. The Association of Personal Photo Organizers has a search feature to help you find someone in your area.
